Home sweet home at Extendicare Countryside in Sudbury | The official opening ceremony celebration

An exciting new chapter has begun in Sudbury, Ontario where residents, families, team members, and officials recently celebrated the grand opening of Extendicare Countryside, the newest long-term care home in the region.

The newly built and modernized long-term care home has capacity for 256 residents, including 58 new residents who are in need of long-term care in the Sudbury region.

“When I first saw Countryside, I thought, ‘It is so big!’,” says Joyce, a resident and president of the home’s Residents’ Council. “It’s beautiful and a lot of the residents like it here. I really like the team members. They’re wonderful. They provide us with great care.”

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was joined by the Honourable Stan Cho, Ontario’s Minister of Long-Term Care, Paul Lefebvre, Mayor of Greater Sudbury, and Dr. Michael Guerriere, our CEO to commemorate the milestone.

“Extendicare has been delivering long-term care in Canada for more than 50 years. Today, we are more committed than ever to building new homes to support the growing number of seniors who will need high-quality care in the years ahead,” says Dr. Guerriere. “This new home in Sudbury reflects the importance we place on providing seniors with the best care available in wonderful surroundings.”

“I was very grateful for the chance to speak on behalf of the residents’ council and share our voices,” says Joyce who spoke at the event. “I was very happy to see everyone come together and share such wonderful speeches. The entrance was very nicely put together, and I greatly enjoyed meeting with the mayor and minister.”

Continuing a history of long-term care in Sudbury

In late March 2024, residents moved from the former Extendicare Falconbridge, a building more than 50 years old, to their brand-new home at Extendicare Countryside. On move-in day, a video shared on LinkedIn captured the emotion and awe of residents as they were welcomed by team members.

Highlights of the new home:

• Private bedrooms for all will improve resident privacy
• There are eight communities in the home that serve 32 residents with dedicated dining rooms, activity spaces and communal lounges, visiting spaces, and outdoor courtyards
• Thoughtful, dementia-friendly design, including a designated area for Memory Care with innovative wall and door murals, and tailored activities to help residents connect with their environment.

Extendicare’s future long-term care home projects

Extendicare continues to redevelop every older long-term care home in our network, a key commitment in our multi-year, national Improving Care Plan

In the coming months, Extendicare will open newly constructed long-term care homes in Kingston and Ottawa. Ground-breaking events will also be held on upcoming projects in communities across Ontario.

At Countryside, residents and families alike are proud of their new home and look forward to starting this new chapter and creating more memories together.

“I’m pleased with the overall appearance of the new facility,” says Mike Los, a member of the Family Council whose loved one is a resident at Countryside. “I think it will be great for the residents, their families and the staff.”
