Extendicare Statement to CBC Go Public

The following is the full statement which was provided to CBC Go Public by Extendicare in response to issues raised regarding Extendicare Athabasca:

“On the issue of access to incontinence products at Extendicare Athabasca, we follow well-established procedures to ensure that incontinence products are always available to our residents. Our long-standing procedure empowers Health Care Aides to access products for residents as they need them. The email which was referred to in the CBC Go Public report related to a brief time when we were impelled to adjust the distribution process to address a personnel issue. Once this issue was resolved, we reinstated our existing distribution process.

We disagree with a number of the allegations that have been made by those people interviewed in the course of your investigation. It is noteworthy that these issues were reviewed by Alberta Health Services in September of 2018 as well as under the Continuing Care Health Services Standards in January 2019 and Extendicare Athabasca’s practices in these areas were validated.

Regarding issues relating to the review being conducted by the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA), we again note this investigation is still underway and we look forward to the release of the report.”
